PowerPoint presentations by internationally renowned practitioners of lipedema surgery will provide insights into the fundamentals and physiopathology of lipedema, its clinical features, and its differential diagnosis with overweight, obesity, and lymphedema.
Vascular surgery and lymphatic drainage specialists will show the importance of conservative treatment, the value of the multidisciplinary approach in lipedema treatment, and the manual lymphatic drainage protocol in preoperative preparation and the postoperative period.
Plastic surgeons with extensive experience in lipedema surgery will illustrate theoretically and in practice in the operating room the specific way to mark up lipedema patients, the differential surgical approach with common lipodystophy, the surgical technique and methodology in the theater (tips & tricks), prevention, early diagnosis, and how to manage complications.

Interactive keynote presentations with the surgeons in attendance where general aspects on lipedema will be discussed from a multidisciplinary approach by internationally renowned specialists in lipedema treatment. The introductory presentation will begin with an overview on lipedema, including prevalence, etiopathogenesis, genetic bases and diagnosis.
The following presentations by Dr Rodrigues and Dr Muñoz will take a practical approach to the surgical technique, outcome optimisation in the OR and postoperative management. The theory session will continue with the presentation by Deborah Rezende on conservative management, immediate postoperative recovery and maintenance.
Finally, there will be a Q&A between faculty and attendees and the two clinical cases for Friday’s surgery session will be presented.
Preoperative: marking up the target areas, identification of the clinical characteristics of lipedema in surgical site marking, surgery planning.
Intraoperative: Selection and use of the different types of cannulas offered by the Microaire-Pal platform, criteria in selecting them. Sequential surgical treatment by plans and target zones. Specific treatment of critical zones: peripatellar region, proximal third tibia and ankle.
Immediate postoperative: Intraoperative conservative measures in thrombosis prophylaxis. Intraoperative dressing technique. Control of postoperative pain management and fluid therapy.
